American Thinker

Original Artwork by Beth Inglish

American Thinker was created during a period when I was deeply exploring fabric as a storytelling medium. In 2012, I began combining sewing, textiles, and mixed media as a way to blur the lines between fashion, identity, and fine art. This piece became one of the strongest examples of that exploration.

The work was originally created for a juried exhibition called In the Nude. My interpretation of the theme was conceptual and playful. I asked myself, what does “in the nude” really mean? If the underwear is on the artwork, then the person who is not wearing it is technically the one who is nude. That idea sparked the concept behind this piece.

Constructed from Fruit of the Loom white briefs, an American flag bandana, and hand-applied embellishments, the figure takes on a reflective pose — a thinker contemplating identity, culture, and symbolism. The materials themselves carry meaning: everyday fabric transformed into something intentional and thought-provoking.

My background as a costume designer heavily influenced this work. I have sewn my entire life, and at this stage in my practice I was merging my love of textiles with fine art, hand and machine sewing directly into the composition and stretching it onto canvas.

American Thinker received First Place in the juried exhibition, marking an important moment in my artistic evolution and my early experimentation with fabric-based mixed media.
